Akella Chendrasekhar is the Clinical Chair of Surgery. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his M.A. in Chemistry from the University of Arkansas and his M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1988. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and has received recertification in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He was elected to the fellowship at the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP). The Department of Surgery Education at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and the Surgery Residency Program at Lincoln Hospital Our Lady of Mercy both presented him with the Teacher of the Year award. He served as the Trauma and Critical Care Director at both of those institutions. His last position was Medical Director of the Emergency Department and General Surgeon at the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn New York where he is currently the Director of Trauma & Critical Care in the Department of Surgery.
