She received her Bachelor of Science with a major in Microbiology from the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada) in 2000. She then started graduate school at the University of Alberta in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (Edmonton, Canada), and attained a PhD in Immunology. While there, Dr. Kirwan’s studies focused on the regulation of natural killer cells. She later began a post doctoral fellowship in Winnipeg and Kenya studying HIV, focusing on HIV resistance in a group of women in Nairobi. Dr. Kirwan’s teaching interests and previous experiences include medical microbiology, infection, and immunology for nursing, medicine and laboratory medicine & pathology students.
